Answer TWO questions. All questions are worth equal marks.

1. Case study research in accounting and finance is often used to build (as opposed to test) theory. Describe what such a process of theory development from case study research should typically entail.  (50 marks)

2. For your dissertation you plan to undertake research into the use of performance management systems in modern business organisations. Discuss how you might use case study research methods for such a project, including whether you would use a single case or multiple cases, and the issues you need to consider in designing the project.  (50  marks)

3. Compare and contrast the qualitative research methods of interviews and focus groups and discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of the two methods as a basis for data collection.  (50 marks)

4. The notion of triangulation plays a central role in mixed methods research combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Such triangulation can be used for either the purpose of theory development or theory testing. Sometimes, the two purposes can also be combined. Describe how the three different approaches typically manifest themselves and how they can help to address specific validity issues in mixed methods research.  (50 marks)
